THRU AUGUST 6TH -- URBAN ARCHEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL -- The public is invited to watch archeologists on site at the Whaley House every weekend from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm as part of the new Archeological Field School program is in session. Headed by Dr. Seth Mallios – anthropology professor at SDSU – the excavation on the grounds of the historic park will be complete and the 19th-century cistern (well) will be reconstructed as part of the ongoing restoration of the Whaley House grounds. JULY 8 -- MEET THE AUTHOR -- Meet Linda Pequegnat who has authored the book "This Day In San Diego History" which gives readers a look at the people, places and events that helped make San Diego the unique, colorful and eclectic city and county that it is. The booksigning will be hosted by Old Town Gift Co. from 3:00 to 5:00 pm in Old Town State Park's Fiesta de Reyes complex.

JULY 10 -- A FESTIVAL, A CIRCUS, A STAGECOACH: OH MY! -- Make a point to visit Old Town for this all-day free festival in celebration of the historic reopening of the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant (formerly Casa de Bandini). Beginning at 1:00, the day will start with live entertainment including strolling actors and musicians. Circus performers will stroll throughout the Old Town State Historic Park and kids can enjoy stagecoach rides, horse saddling and tacking lessons. At 4:00 pm, the merchant of the park will host a multi-denominational blessing ceremony on the steps of the refurbished hotel with a Kumayaay sage ceremony along with dignitaries thrown in the mix. The Zirc Ubu circus will take the stage at 8:00 pm and perform 19th century-inspired acts uch as an aerial tissue dance, acrobatics, fire breathing, juggling and sword swallowing. This event is free to the public.

Gaslamp Quarter, 3 miles
Over the last few years, the Gaslamp Quarter has become San Diego's entertainment capital. There is always something to do in this trendy part of town where new nightclubs, restaurants and cafés seem to pop up weekly. The Gaslamp Quarter is 21 blocks of sidewalk cafés and open-air restaurants, jazz clubs, late night dancing, resident artists and micro breweries.
